Series Concept

The Ultrasound Technologist, or Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, uses ultrasound equipment to produce images for diagnosing diseases and physical conditions.

Sonographers work within general guidelines established by a physician but use independent judgment to achieve the highest quality image. They perform a wide range of ultrasound procedures, including abdominal, breast, cardiac, chest, obstetric, ocular, pelvic, thyroid, transcranial, and Doppler.

Specific duties include preparing patients, explaining procedures, consulting with physicians to select tests, and operating transducers, oscilloscopes, and other devices. Sonographers scan body regions using A-, B-, or M-mode, optimize displays, record images, and note structural details and artifacts. They calibrate equipment, troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues, develop, label, and maintain recordings and logs, and preserve reference material for teaching and research.

At higher levels, Sonographers assist in training students and staff, demonstrate new techniques, and monitor patient progress and assess image quality.

Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Under supervision, incumbents perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures and related duties as described in the Series Concept.

Senior Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform a wide range of ultrasound procedures including complex diagnostic specialty scans. They evaluate images to ensure optimal quality for diagnosis and may assist in training staff or demonstrate ultrasound techniques to medical teams.

Principal Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

The Principal Sonographer performs all sonographic and specialty procedures at an expert level. They perform complex procedures, provide education and training to new fellows, students, junior staff, and assist with difficult procedures requiring advanced skill. They participate in performance improvement activities and may lead quality assurance and accreditation initiatives.

Lead Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Lead Sonographers serve as subject matter experts and manage daily operations, including department scheduling, workflow, and communications. They serve as a department contact for biomedical and facilities issues, oversee staff training and compliance, and facilitate conflict resolution. They assist the Ultrasound Supervisor/Manager with staffing, evaluations, and projects, lead clinical training for students, and contribute to long-term planning and process improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited diagnostic medical sonography program. RDMS certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A relevant specialty credential is required e.g., AB, OBGYN, or RVT).

Senior Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited diagnostic medical sonography program or an equivalent combination of education and experience. RDMS certification and relevant specialty credentials are required (e.g., AB and OBGYN or RVT).

Principal Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Lead Ultrasound Technologist / Sonographer

Experience requirements are set at each level. Acute Care hospital experience is also required.
