Series Concept
Ultrasound Technologists perform a variety of technical procedures in the application of non-ionizing high frequency ultrasonic waves to patients for diagnosis of disease and/or physical condition; and perform other related duties as required.
Incumbents work within general guidelines established by a staff physician but are required to make independent judgments in terms of determining the acceptability of each patient’s scan so as to preclude recall of the patient for further ultrasonic examination. Ultrasound studies performed may include ocular and orbital ultrasonography, abdominal, retroperitoneal, cardiac, ob-gyn, thyroid, breast, chest, Doppler and radiation therapy treatment planning and/or echoencephalography.
Incumbents typically operate an ultrasound emitter to scan pertinent anatomical areas and record the signal response in a photographic and/or direct writing mode; prepare patients for examination and explain procedures in order to allay apprehensions; consult with referring physician regarding patient’s medical history to determine the type of ultrasonic procedure required and to correlate the clinical history with the test to be performed; utilize ancillary devices such as selective transducers, oscilloscope and camera; scan regions of interest in A-mode, B-mode or M-mode using non-store technique, optimizing display parameters, gain, time gain compensation and camera setting and record on film; note significance of all structures displayed on the oscilloscope and recognize artifacts and electronic equipment limitations; develop film by automatic and/or manual processing, properly labeling, coating, and mounting permanent recordings of scans; maintain daily log chart of all scans performed; perform calibrations to adjust and maintain ultrasound equipment; and maintain ultrasound reference material for teaching and research purposes.
Incumbents may assist in the orientation of students and staff towards new techniques and provide ultrasonic demonstrations; and may review pathological, surgical, and delivery reports to follow patient’s progress and provide means of reviewing the accuracy of ultrasonic examinations.
The Ultrasound Technologist series consists of three levels with the distinction between levels based on the scope and/or complexity of diagnostic ultrasonic functions, and the degree of supervision exercised.
Class Concepts
Principal Ultrasound Technologist
Under direction, incumbents supervise lower level Ultrasound Technologists and coordinate all technical and clerical work related to the performance of diagnostic ultrasound procedures at a campus medical center. Incumbents make assignments and review the work of lower level Ultrasound Technologists; train and/or direct technologists in the performance of new ultrasound techniques and procedures; and research, develop and formulate new techniques and procedures in the field of ultrasound under the direction of a staff physician. Incumbents order supplies and evaluate new products and equipment for possible future use; prepare budget estimates; organize training programs and provide ultrasonic demonstrations for students and staff; and are assigned responsibility for the maintenance and operation of equipment.
Senior Ultrasound Technologist
Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform either a broad range of ultrasound procedures utilizing various modes of equipment operation or perform highly complex diagnostic specialty procedures. Incumbents evaluate scans and determine the course of a study to insure that physicians are provided with optimal studies for diagnosis. Incumbents may assist with the training of Ultrasound Technologists; and may demonstrate ultrasonic procedures and equipment to other medical staff members.
Ultrasound Technologist
Under supervision, incumbents perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures and related duties as described in the Series Concept.
Minimum Qualifications
Principal Ultrasound Technologist
Two years of college, preferably with courses in physiology, psychology and electronics, and three years of experience in diagnostic ultrasound technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Senior Ultrasound Technologist
Two years of college, preferably with courses in physiology, psychology and electronics, and two years of experience in diagnostic ultrasound technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Ultrasound Technologist
Two years of college, preferably with courses in physiology, psychology and electronics, and one year of experience in diagnostic ultrasound technology which includes successful completion of a traineeship in ultrasonic technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
