Class Concepts

Under close supervision, Radiation Therapy Technologist Trainees perform therapeutic procedures in a training capacity under the supervision of registered Radiation Therapy Technologists while concurrently receiving classroom instruction; and perform other related duties as required.

Radiation Therapy Technologist Trainees receive one or two-year training which qualifies the incumbents to perform the duties of a Radiation Therapy Technologist in California. Incumbents typically receive classroom instruction, homework assignments, periodic examinations, and a prescribed plan of on-the-job training designed to familiarize the trainee with the various functions of a radiation oncology department; observe and become familiar with the basic equipment, terminology and techniques of radiation oncology; assist in positioning patients for treatment; select technical factors and assist in operating radiographic equipment; take radiographic films for simulation; and assist in the preparation of bars, wedges or bolus.

Incumbents may assist in the cleaning and preventive maintenance of equipment and treatment rooms and may assist Radiologists and Radiation Therapy Technologists on special research projects.

Minimum Qualifications

For the two-year program, graduation from high school preferably with completion of courses in the basic sciences and mathematics; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

For the one-year program, graduation from an accredited school of radiologic technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience and s and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
