Series Concept
Urology Technicians prepare patients for urological procedures; perform various catheterizations; instill medications; assist in surgery; take and develop X-rays; schedule surgical procedures; assist and instruct patients in care and maintenance of urological appliances; and maintain supplies and equipment. Incumbents review patients’ charts to determine the reasons for patients’ visits; insure that required equipment is on hand for specific examinations and procedures; obtain urine specimens from patients; spin down and prepare slides for physician’s examination; perform and assist physician with various endoscopy procedures; and instruct patients in proper catheter care and use of fluids and solutions. Incumbents may remove sutures and change dressings; and may perform other related duties as requested by physician.
Class Concepts
Senior Urology Technician
Under general supervision, incumbents perform advanced duties on a regular basis. They are generally assigned the more difficult cases requiring a thorough background of experience and knowledge of urological procedures and independent judgment.
Urology Technician
Under supervision, incumbents perform the majority of the duties outlined in the series concept on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Urology Technician
Completion of urological technician training and two years of applicable experience in an operating room, cysto room or clinic; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Urology Technician
Completion of urological technician training; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
