Series Concept

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician series performs pre-analytical and post-analytical activities including, performing phlebotomy (including demonstrated competency with neonatal/pediatric patients) and specimen processing duties, answering phones to give reports and responding to questions within scope of knowledge, accessioning, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, troubleshooting specimen/test order problems, filing, and participating in special studies as required by the laboratory and medical staff. Performs skilled, efficient venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients following phlebotomy methods established by this laboratory and must ensure work is performed properly and in a timely manner. Other duties may include assisting with clinical resource leadership/training in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing, monitoring inventories of media and reagents used in diagnostic testing, quality control/quality assurance support, performing EKGs, computer operation (report printing) and data entry and retrieval.

Class Concept

Certified Phlebotomy Technician III

Under general supervision of a Senior Supervisor CL T or designated other responsible licensed technical personnel, the CPT III may function as a team leader with set responsibilities and assigned duties. Mentors new hires. The CPT III performs phlebotomy at the CPT II level. Performs skilled, efficient venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients following phlebotomy methods established by this laboratory. Work is assigned daily and reviewed by supervisory personnel or designee. The incumbent must ensure all work is performed properly and in a timely manner and all benches are covered by staff

Certified Phlebotomy Technician II

Under general supervision of a Senior Supervisor CL T or designated other responsible licensed technical personnel performs phlebotomy and specimen processing duties, Performs skilled, efficient venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients following phlebotomy methods established by the lab. Performs accessioning, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, troubleshooting specimen/test order problems. Incumbent must have a minimum of 5 years laboratory/phlebotomy experience. Other duties may include providing clinical resource leadership/training in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing.

Performs and completes with accuracy and within established time frame any duties and/or projects assigned by Supervisor and their designee.

Determines that tests are properly ordered. Prepares work area daily and maintains adequate working supplies.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician I

Under supervision of a Senior Supervisor CL T or designated other responsible licensed technical personnel performs phlebotomy and specimen processing duties. Performs the full range of duties as outlined in the Series Concept above. Performs skilled, efficient venous and/or skin punctures on all patients following phlebotomy methods established by this laboratory.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician II-Per Diem

On an as needed basis, perform the CPT II duties outlined in the Series Concept.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician I-Per Diem

On an as needed basis, perform the CPT I duties outlined in the Series Concept.

Minimum Qualifications

Certified Phlebotomy Technician III

Must be a Certified Phlebotomist by the State of California High school diploma. Minimum of 5 years laboratory/phlebotomy experience. Perform venous and/or skin punctures.

Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts. On a daily basis, assess overall workload for any area that needs help, and help co-workers without being reassigned by the supervisor.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician II

Must be a Certified Phlebotomist by the State of California Minimum of 5 years laboratory/phlebotomy experience. Perform venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients.

Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts. On a daily basis, assess overall workload for any area that needs help, and help co-workers without being reassigned by the supervisor.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician I

Must be a Certified Phlebotomist by the State of California High school diploma. Perform venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician II-Per Diem

Must be a Certified Phlebotomist by the State of California Minimum of 5 years laboratory/phlebotomy experience. Perform venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician I-Per Diem

Must be a Certified Phlebotomist by the State of California High school diploma. Perform venous and/or skin punctures on adults, pediatric and newborn patients.
