Series Concept

Perfusionists perform duties associated with the operation of heart-lung and other equipment during all cases requiring cardiopulmonary by-pass (ie. open heart surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, heart/liver transplants). Incumbents assemble, operate and maintain heart-lung machines and related equipment under sterile conditions. Incumbents assist in the procurement of perfusion equipment, maintain equipment inventory and maintenance records, and may participate in clinical research activities involving testing and use of new techniques and organ perfusion equipment such as pumps, oxygenators and heat exchangers. They may participate in formal technician training programs; direct the work of other Perfusionists and may assist in the recruitment and selection of Perfusionists. The series consists of three levels: operational, advanced operational, and lead. The distinction between levels is based on the complexity of case assignments, and the assignment of .lead responsibilities. The perfusionist series recognizes supervisory responsibility at the Principal level.

Class Concepts

Per Diem Senior Perfusionist

Under supervision, incumbents perform duties similar to those performed by a Senior Perfusionist. Incumbents typically are assigned the most difficult cases such as neonatal and pediatric cases. This is the advanced operational level.

Per Diem Perfusionist

Under supervision, incumbents perform duties similar to those performed by a Perfusionist. This is the operational level of the series.

Principal Perfusionist – Supervisor
Principal Perfusionist

Under general supervision, incumbents serve in a lead capacity performing the tasks outlined in the Series Concept. Principal Perfusionist – Supervisors perform supervisory duties which include completing performance appraisals, implementing corrective action, assigning work schedules and directing the work of Senior Perfusionists and Perfusionists. In addition to lead duties, incumbents also perform advanced operational duties found at the Senior Perfusionist level. The Perfusionist series recognizes supervisory responsibility at this level. Positions allocated to the Principal Perfusionist – Supervisor title must meet the criteria for supervision as defined in the supplemental Guidelines for Supervisor Classes (SAM 12).

Senior Perfusionist

Under supervision incumbents perform advanced operational duties. Incumbents are assigned the most difficult cases requiring special training, such as neonatal and pediatric cases; and perform the normal range of duties ou~lined in the series concept.

Incumbents may participate in equipment evaluation and procurement; maintain records pertaining to equipment use and maintenance; participate in research programs involving testing, and evaluation of experimental techniques and equipment; participate in formal training programs and perform the normal range of duties outlined in the series concept.

Perfusionist

Under supervision, incumbents perform the range of clinical duties outlined in the series concept.

This is the operational level of the series where the majority of positions are allocated.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants and incumbents are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

The Perfusionist series recognizes supervisory responsibility at the Principal level. Positions allocated to the supervisory title must meet the criteria for supervision as defined in the Supplemental guidelines for Supervisor Classes (SAM 12).

NOTE: Specific qualification requirements are approved for positions by the Personnel Manager in accordance with the provisions of Staff Personnel Policies 210.8 and 210.9.
