Series Concept
Reprographics Technicians perform and/or supervise a variety of tasks involving reprographics services which utilize both offset and direct contact duplicating equipment; and perform other related duties as required.
Incumbents are typically assigned to a reprographics center utilizing a wide variety of equipment such as offset printing machines, mimeographs, ditto duplicators, vacuum frame process cameras, and various types of bindery equipment capable of reprodSystemwideng printed material involving a variety of reprographic processes.
The Reprographics Technician series reflects levels of difficulty such as specialized knowledge of the range and degree of sophistication of the repro- graphics equipment and processes required and utilized; the degree of super- visory responsibilities; and the involvement in administrative duties including consultative and advisory services.
Determination of whether a reprographics center should be considered as large or small shall be based on a combination of factors including, but not limited to: (1) budget and volume of the center; (2) number of full-time-equivalent employees; (3) diversity of class of positions within the center; (4) multi- shift operations; (5) sophistication of equipment (equipment capable of handling difficult work, e.g., close hairline registration due to multicolor and half tone requirements); and (6) scope of operations (e.g., use of compositors, photographic equipment, microfilm equipment, etc.).
Class Concepts
Senior Reprographics Supervisor
Under direction, incumbents plan, coordinate and direct the work of a repro- graphics center having a wide variety of technically sophisticated equipment. Incumbents are typically responsible for the operations of a reprographics center; schedule work and assign personnel; maintain work flow; develop standards of quality and quantity control; select staff; and evaluate performances for taking or recommending personnel actions.
Additionally, incumbents in a small reprographics center direct the preparation of cost estimates and the maintenance of records of expenditures; provide consultative services to users on matters relating to reprographic needs; may prepare the annual reprographics center budget request; and may make purchase recommendations for new equipment.
Reprographics Supervisor
Under general supervision, incumbents supervise the set up, operation and maintenance of a variety of technically sophisticated equipment capable of handling difficult work involving close hairline registration due to multi- color and half-tone requirements; involving use of process cameras in making enlargements or reductions requiring dropout and masking; and utilizing one or a combination of continuous tone, half-tone, litho or cronopaque processes. Typically incumbents maintain a wide variety of reprographics equipment; assign and review the work performed by subordinate employees; and evaluate their performance to recommend appropriate personnel actions.
Additionally, incumbents in a small reprographics center schedule all work for the center, establish deadlines, and maintain work flow; analyze the condition of present equipment and recommend additional equipment; and establish work procedures and standards. Incumbents may also-assist in providing technical advice on the costs of a request in terms of time and money, and relative priority.
Principal Reprographics Technician
Under general supervision, incumbents set up, operate and maintain a variety of offset reproduction and related processing equipment capable of handling more difficult kinds of work such as half-tones, duo-tones, overlays, multi- color, close register or exact scale work.
Additionally, incumbents in small reprographics centers provide technical assistance to users in the determination of whether a request is within the capability of the center. Incumbents may schedule work and assist in the orientation and training of Senior Reprographic Technicians.
In a bindery operation, incumbents have full supervisory responsibility for a large bindery section having sophisticated equipment. Duties include scheduling, assignment of work, pagination, folding, trimming, binding and related operations.
Senior Reprographics Technician
Under supervision, incumbents set up, operate and maintain a variety of offset reproduction and related processing equipment to duplicate black and white or single color material. Typically incumbents prepare masters for printing; and may expose and develop plates of offset process duplicators. Incumbents may also prepare plates for storage and may assist in training other employees.
In a bindery operation, incumbents operate and maintain technically sophisticated bindery equipment with stapling and folding attachments, power cutters, and gang folders; and may serve as the working supervisor of other bindery personnel in large reprographics centers.
Reprographics Technician
Under supervision, incumbents set up, operate and maintain direct impression duplicating equipment. Reprographics Technicians receive work orders and operate equipment; act as working leaders of Assistant Reprographics Technicians in the operation, cleaning and general maintenance of the equipment; and direct the wrapping and labeling of completed work orders.
In a bindery operation, incumbents operate standard bindery equipment; and supervise other bindery personnel.
The Reprographics Technician is distinguished from the Assistant Reprographics Technician in that incumbents typically train and/or supervise Assistant Reprographics Technicians in the set up and operation of direct impression duplicating and/or bindery equipment,
Assistant Reprographics Technician
Under close supervisions incumbents set up, operate and maintain direct impression duplicating equipment. Incumbents typically adjust equipment to accommodate various sizes and textures of paper; clean and make minor adjustments to equipment; and perform related work, including wrapping and labeling.
In a bindery operation, incumbents operate standard collators; butting machines; and padding, stapling, taping and plastic binding equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Reprographics Supervisor
Graduation from high school and four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of offset and direct impression reproduction equipment, including one year in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Reprographics Supervisor
Graduation from high school and three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of offset and direct impression reproduction equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Principal Reprographics Technician
Graduation from high school and two years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a variety of offset and direct impression reproduction equipment, and/or bindery equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Senior Reprographics Technician
Graduation from high school and one year of experience in the operation of offset duplicating equipment and/or bindery equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Reprographics Technician
Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in duplicating machine operation and one year of experience in the operation of direct impression duplicating and/or bindery equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Assistant Reprographics Technician
Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in duplicating machine operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
