Series Concept
Truck Drivers operate light or medium service trucks in the hauling of materials and equipment; load and unload trucks individually or as part of a crew; deliver material and obtain release signature of receiver; and perform other related duties as required.
Positions in this class are distinguished from other positions involving the operation of laundry trucks or other motor vehicles by the nature of the material transported, and knowledge of and the use of hydraulic hoists, hand and powered dollies and pallet moving equipment.
Class Concepts
Supervising Truck Driver
Under general supervision incumbents serve as working leaders of a crew of Truck Drivers; perform the duties as outlined in the series concept; and transmit and explain tasks to co-workers.
Truck Driver
Under supervision incumbents perform the full range of duties as outlined in the series concept.
Examples of duties allocated to this level of difficulty and responsibility are as follows:
- Cleans, services and performs minor maintenance on vehicles.
- Drives a rubbish truck, making routine collections and disposing of refuse.
- Assures proper stowage of material (1) through appropriate packing and padding of office furniture, books, medical apparatus and (2) efficient handling based upon sequence of delivery.
- Operates a dump truck in the delivery of land fill or gravel or the removal of rubbish.
Minimum Qualifications
Supervising Truck Driver and Truck Driver
Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations, and one year of experience in the operation of automotive equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Must have a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles Driver’s License for the class of vehicle to be operated. Must have no license restrictions other than for corrective lenses.
