Series Concept

Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians adjust, service, maintain and repair a variety of heavy duty vehicular equipment, such as garbage trucks, buses, and other types of heavy duty vehicular equipment with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 10,000 pounds.

Incumbents inspect heavy duty vehicular equipment (gasoline, diesel, propane, etc.) to determine the corrective action necessary; perform or assist in the major repair of vehicular equipment; including major engine overhauls; tune-ups; reline, adjust, and major overhauls on brake systems, transmissions, and differentials; lubricate moving parts pack wheel bearings and universal joints; operate and maintain vehicular shop equipment; estimate the cost of vehicular repairs; perform minor brazing and welding work; install/replace oil filters or oil filter elements; replace mufflers, tail pipes, and headlights; service vehicles with gas, ‘oil, and cooling system fluid; replace and rotate tires; keep maintenance records; and prepare .-. erders to reflect time and material usage. The series consists of two levels, the Assistant level and the fully operational level and differs from the Farm Machinery Mechanic series in that incumbents do not repair or maintain farm equipment (i.e., bulldozers, combines, graders, fertilizer spreaders, etc.).

Class Concepts

Heavy Duty Equipment Technician

Under general supervision, incumbents perform operational level heavy duty vehicular equipment repair duties.

Typically at this level, incumbents adjust, service, replace and/or repair all vehicular components to include the following systems and subsystems: engine, ignition, fuel, heating/cooling, charging, exhaust, electrical, starting, drive train, braking, steering, suspension, hydraulic and all other related systems; operate and maintain shop equipment, perform minor brazing and welding work; and keep records and document work as prescribed.

Incumbents may train and/or supervise Assistant Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians.

Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Assistant

Under supervision, incumbents assist Heavy Duty Equipment Technician in maintaining and repairing heavy duty vehicular equipment; or perform the range of Heavy Duty Equipment Technician duties in a limited capacity.

Typically at this level, incumbents adjust, service, and replace all vehicular components to include the following systems and subsystems: engine, ignition, fuel, heating/cooling, charging, exhaust, electrical, starting, drive train, braking, steering, suspension, hydraulic and all other related systems; and keep records and document work as prescribed.

Assistant Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians may also perform repair work on components under the close supervision of Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians in a training capacity.

The Assistant level of this series differs from the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician in that ; incumbents at the Assistant level are not responsible for the actual repair of components. Their basic task is to remove and replace components. The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician is responsible for rebuilding/repairing of vehicular components.

Minimum Qualifications

Incumbents are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the sucessful performance of the duties assigned to the positions.
