Marine Electricians supervise or perform the required duties in the operation, maintenance and repair of shipboard electrical equipment and installations; and perform other related duties as required.

Marine Electrician

Under general supervision, incumbents maintain and repair shipboard electrical equipment and installations such as the following: all lighting and power aboard ship, direct current and alternating current motors, generators, M-G sets, rotary converters, controllers and appliances, electrical propulsion systems, electrical steering controls, alarm signal circuits and selsyn systems, gyrocompasses, interior communication apparatus, searchlights, pitometer logs, sonic and supersonic depth finders, telephones, repeaters, fire and bilge pumps, air compressors, hydrographic winches, anchor windlasses, ventilating fans, and magnetic control systems. Marine Electricians also compute, log out and install simple electrical circuits; read electrical blueprints; may administer first aid for electrical shock and burns; and stand security watches.

Minimum Qualifications

Marine Electrician

Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations; four years of training as a crew member on board seagoing vessels, at least three years of which was spent in the electrical department; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. License Requirement: Incumbents in this capacity shall have in their possession such valid licenses and/or certificates as are or may be required.
