Class Concepts

Physical Plant Mechanic Supervisor

Under direction, incumbents supervise and coordinate the work of large Physical Plant Mechanic crews. This activity involves daily scheduling of work assignments, training, ordering and inspecting material required for the job, dispatching, establishing or adjusting work procedures to meet schedules, analyzing and resolving work problems, maintaining records, recommending personnel actions, and exercising responsibility for the quality of the work produced by those supervised.

Assistant Physical Plant Mechanic Supervisor

Under general supervision, incumbents serve as working leaders of Senior Physical Plant Mechanics/Physical Plant Mechanics; or serve as assistants to a supervisor for a large group and assume responsibility for the assigned crews in the absence of the supervisor. This activity involves performing work of a Senior Physical Plant Mechanic, transmitting orders, and explaining tasks to coworkers and maintaining time and material records.

Senior Physical Plant Mechanic

Under supervision, Senior Physical Plant Mechanics perform complex projects requiring specialized skills, or the utilization of specialized sophisticated equipment on a regular basis. Senior Physical Plant Mechanics frequently participate in the design of assemblies, systems, equipment and/or controls. Incumbents work from drawings, models, or verbal instructions; and select necessary materials. In the electrical/mechanical trades, assignments may include the full range of operational level duties. In the structural trades, assignments are normally limited to complex projects and work requiring specialized skills in addition to operational level skills. Examples of typical assignments are:

  • Incumbents maintain, repair and install electromechanical components of elevators, dumbwaiters, trayveyors, conveyers, cranes, hoists, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and ancillary equipment.
  • Incumbents maintain, repair and install components of ultrasonic and other security alarms, utility alarms, hydrogen alarms, radiation alarms, telemetry controls and motor controls.

Lead Physical Plant Mechanic

Under general supervision, incumbents serve as working leaders of Physical Plant Mechanics. This activity involves performing work of a Physical Plant Mechanic, transmitting orders and explaining tasks to coworkers, and maintaining time and material records.

Physical Plant Mechanic

Under supervision, incumbents work from blueprints, drawings, models, or verbal instructions, select necessary materials, and use tools standard to trades. Assignments at this level are expected to be of moderate difficulty and responsibility, and performed on a regular basis. In the structural trades, assignments may include the full range of operational level tasks. In the electrical/mechanical trades, assignments may be limited to work requiring operational level skills, but not requiring specialized skills or the use of specialized or sophisticated equipment. Examples of typical assignments are:

  • Incumbents perform carpentry duties necessary to maintain and install in good repair wood structures and equipment such as counters, benches, partitions, doors, roofs, floors, stairs, and casings.
  • Incumbents paint and redecorate walls, woodwork, and fixtures including preparing surfaces and mixing colors.
  • Incumbents install, maintain, or repair equipment for the distribution and utilization of electric energy.
  • Incumbents install or repair water, steam, gas, or other types of pipes and pipefittings; cut thread, bend, assemble and fasten various sizes of pipe; open clogged drains; replace washers; and install vents, traps, and fixtures.
