Series Concept

Irrigation Specialists perform a variety of advanced semi-skilled irrigation duties including installing, repairing, and maintaining manual and automatic irrigation systems ·and related equipment such as hydraulic and electrical irrigation controllers; irrigation control wires; PVC, concrete, galvanized iron and copper irrigation lines; automatic and manual valves; and drip, mechanical, or hydraulic irrigation heads. Incumbents inspect irrigation systems; repair and adjust controllers, automatic and manual valves, and complex sprinkler heads; set up a preventive maintenance program for installed systems; write material orders for repairs, parts, and material supplies; and perform related duties as required. Incumbents may direct the work of laborers, groundskeepers, and ground equipment operators in excavation required for irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair.

Class Concepts

Lead Irrigation Specialist

Under general supervision, incumbents serve as working leaders of a crew of semiskilled workers in installing, repairing, and maintaining manual and automatic irrigation systems and related equipment. Incumbents typically perform the work of an irrigation specialist in addition to transmitting orders, explaining tasks to workers, and maintaining time and material records.

Irrigation Specialist

Under supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties as outlined in the series concept.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants for positions in the Lead Irrigation Specialist class are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
