Series Concept

Upholsterers perform or supervise duties in the maintenance and repair of upholstered furniture, equipment, and related items; and perform other related duties as required.

The Upholsterer series consists of two levels. Upholsterer is the operational level, and Upholstery Supervisor is the supervisory level.

Class Concepts

Upholstery Supervisor

Under general supervision, incumbents supervise a group of operational level Upholsterers, assistants and helpers.’ Upholstery Supervisors typically transmit and explain work orders to Upholsterers, help workers solve work problems, see that assignments are completed satisfactorily, and perform the work of operational level Upholsterers.

Upholsterer

Under supervision, Upholsterers perform a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of upholstered furniture, equipment and related items.

Incumbents typically examine upholstery to determine the nature and extent of damage or defects; sew tears or rips; repair or replace springs; tighten or replace padding; measure, cut and install new covering material; refinish wooden or other surfaces; may estimate job-hours and material for each job; and may instruct or lead semi-skilled or unskilled assistants.

Minimum Qualifications

Upholstery Supervisor

Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations; two years of operational level experience as an Upholsterer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Upholsterer

Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations; four years of responsible experience in the upholstery trade and achievement of operational level skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
