Class Concept

Under supervision, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators operate, maintain, and repair valves, pumps, motors, chemical feeders, agitators, sludge removal equipment, and filters used to control the flow of raw water into a treatment plant (influent) and , the flow of purified water (effluent) out of the plant; test water and sewage in the various stages of treatment; and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents typically maintain and repair equipment used in the pretreatment of raw sewage; clean screening, barminutor, and grit chamber; maintain settling basins, grease removal equipment and check, record and replace flow charts in the primary treatment of wastewater; maintain and monitor equipment at the secondary treatment level such as activated sludge, trickling filters and secondary clarifiers; determine and maintain accurate records of the chemical quality, including the bio-chemical oxygen demand, of influent and effluent by simple -chemical tests; chlorinate effluent; perform other laboratory tests in accordance with instructions; operate sludge heater and monitor primary and secondary sludge digestors.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations; certification by the State of California Water Resources Control Board as a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, Grade I level; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
