Series Concept
Television Technicians operate, install, modify, repair and maintain closed-circuit or broadcast television equipment; monitor the visual and audio performance of equipment; diagnose equipment failures and correct malfunctions; assemble audio or visual circuits from schematic diagrams; and perform other related duties as required.
This series is characterized by the use of knowledge and principles of radio and television electronics and the methods, procedures, principles and techniques used in developing, operating, and servicing specialized radio and television equipment. The three levels of difficulty within the series are defined by the complexity of the work performed and the degree of technical responsibility exercised. The series defines a variety of technical activities associated with a closed-circuit or broadcast television facility. Technician tasks, unlike those of Engineers, do not include responsibility for predicting the effects of changes in equipment or for appraising the validity of results on the basis of theoretical considerations. Many of the tasks associated with television modification and maintenance lean heavily on precedent and might also parallel methods of work outlined in the Electronics Technician series.
Class Concepts
Principal Television Technician
Under general supervision incumbents either (1) perform specialized duties in the operation, installation, or modification of radio or television equipment, or (2) supervise a combined total of at least three Television or Senior Television Technicians in a specialized television unit.
Incumbents at this level typically analyze comprehensive equipment schematic diagrams in the repair and modification of television equipment; determine and advise engineers on the practicality of developing new, or adopting existing equipment and systems; monitor and maintain appropriate transmission levels in accordance with Federal regulations; supervise lower level technicians in the operation and repair of television equipment; are assigned responsibility for the operation of a unit studio, microwave, video tape or similar facility; and schedule maintenance on equipment such as video tape recorders, television film chains, transmitter and microwave antennas, down converters and related equipment.
Senior Television Technician
Under supervision, incumbents perform a variety of technical duties in the operation, maintenance and repair of television equipment and evaluate and make recommendations on the technical potential of new of modified television equipment.
Incumbents at this level typically operate master control room equipment and advise Producer-Directors on the technical quality of video images; monitor and adjust audio-visual signals for proper studio or broadcast operating procedures; coordinate and maintain proper television camera signals; follow and maintain program logs; fabricate, assemble, alter and install audio-visual equipment on the basis of diagrams, sketches or verbal instructions; diagnose equipment failures and take corrective action; and instruct and train students in various television operations.
Television Technician
Under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of routine tasks, or assist higher level technicians in the more complex tasks as outlined in the series concept; and maintain and distribute video tape film and equipment.
Incumbents it this level typically operate specific pieces of television production equipment such as lighting and projection equipment, video or audio tape machines, television cameras and audio reproduction equipment; assist with routine equipment maintenance and installation; transport, set up, operate and perform on-site, routine preventative maintenance to production equipment; fabricate simple audio or video circuits from schematic diagrams; set up patching and switching for program distribution; may maintain and control audio visual tapes and equipment distribution at a campus tape library; and assist in the preparation of routine studio productions.
Minimum Qualifications
Principal Television Technician
Completion of two years of college majoring in electronic technology and five years of experience in maintenance and testing of television equipment; a valid Federal Communications Commission radiotelephone operator's license for the type of equipment operated; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential for the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Senior Television Technician
Completion of two years of college majoring in electronic technology and three years of experience in maintenance and testing of television equipment; a valid Federal Communications Commission radiotelephone operator's license for the type of equipment operated; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential for the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Completion of two years of college majoring in electronic technology and one year of experience in maintenance and testing of television equipment; a valid Federal Communications Commission radiotelephone operator's license for the type of equipment operated; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential for the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
