Class Concept

Under general supervision Piano Technicians perform the full range of technical duties associated with the tuning, regulating, voicing, repairing, adjusting, rebuilding and renovating of pianos, and related instruments; and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents typically renovate and rebuild pianos; restore sound boards, bridges, pinblocks and plates; rebuild or adjust damper assemblies, pedal lyre assemblies, key frames and keys; tune, voice, and regulate instruments to the exact tonal qualities and touch desired by individual pianists; recommend replacement of pianos or estimate labor and material costs for repair and renovation; may review specifications of bids for the purchase of pianos; and may inspect instruments upon delivery for compliance with specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and four years of experience in all phases of piano technology including at least two years of experience in the renovation and rebuilding of pianos; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
