Series Concept
Printing Estimators review layouts of manuscripts, forms, bound publications, pamphlets, handbooks, leaflets, and other material for printing and estimate the manufacturing cost of reprodSystemwideng the desired quantity; evaluate the capabilities of the printing operations including composition, platemaking, presswork and binding; furnish printers with specifications to be used in the production of the printed material; and perform other related duties as required.
The positions covered by this series require technical knowledge of University and commercial printing capabilities and equipment. Printing is defined to include any or all of the following: offset presses, offset plates, sensitized paper masters; camera equipment; letterpresses; typecasting or typesetting machines; and cutting, binding and stamping equipment required to complete the production process.
Class Concepts
Senior Printing Estimator
Under general direction, Senior Printing Estimators estimate the cost of printing after evaluating the customer specifications and needs; substantiate the final bidding price based on factors such as paper stock, ink, typography, binding instructions, quantity, packaging and shipping instructions. Incumbents maintain records of sizes, grades, thicknesses, weights and price lists of paper; keep current labor and material costs records; refer to previous records of similar productions; and review and compare final production costs with the original analysis and bid.
Incumbents may recommend alternative methods of production to management and suggest alternatives to editors or writers which achieve acceptable results at reduced costs; designate the appropriate commercial printing plants for procurement and sub-contracting; and may act as liaison under the sub-contract.
Examples of duties allocated to this level of difficulty and responsibility are as follows:
Analyzes University printed matter and identifies items which can be more effectively printed by better methods utilizing knowledge of new trends in printing.
Writes specifications for open end contracts for printing, binding and related services determining frequency of printing, types of equipment required, and portions to be subcontracted.
The Senior level is distinguished from the operational level by the degree of difficulty in preparation of printing specifications, the greater variety and kinds of equipment needed, the variety and complexity of the printed matter, and the degree of detail required in writing the specifications.
Printing Estimator
Under general supervision, incumbents estimate costs and time requirements of printing booklets, reprints, covers, stationery, diplomas and other similar items; prepare instructions for printers and maintain job flow records; clarify lay-out requirements to editors and writers; advise customers on printing methods, paper stock, styles of type; order special paper stock and services from commercial plants; assist in writing specifications for standard stock orders and act as liaison with customers.
Examples of duties allocated to this level of difficulty and responsibility are as follows:
Determines the most efficient way of prodSystemwideng jobs and indicates printing instructions on job docket.
Schedules jobs, compares final production costs with original estimate, and determines price to be charged.
Edits University forms to ensure appropriate styles, coordinates similar orders from several departments, and re-orders standard forms based on current inventory.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Printing Estimator
Graduation from college and four years of printing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
