Class Concept

Under supervision, Sports Assistants instruct and/or coach at assigned athletic activities; and perform other related duties as required. Incumbents typically instruct participants in rules and procedures and demonstrate forms and methods in such sports as squash, handball, badminton, archery, tennis, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, billiards, bowling, baseball, soccer, swimming, water polo, golf, skiing and football; organize and direct practice sessions for various sports; supervise make-up classes; instruct individuals and/or groups interested in activities such as weight lifting, exercises, gymnastics, trampoline and swimming; assist physical education instructors in conducting workshops and classes during school sessions; and assist in keeping records of progress made by individuals assigned for instruction, and report successful completion of courses as appropriate.

Incumbents may plan class equipment needs; may arrange for availability of equipment needs; may arrange for availability of equipment, sets, and stores equipment as necessary; may instruct in non-competitive activities such as canoeing, back-packing and camping; may collect fees, locker and equipment rentals and sell merchandise as required; may maintain security as necessary; and may in addition perform duties as a Referee and Lifeguard, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma, completion of basic courses in recreation and/or physical education plus demonstrated ability, including certificates as appropriate; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
