Amanda Chavez first started volunteering with the UC San Diego Staff Association in 2007; at the time, she was a work/life coordinator and believed the Staff Assembly would be a strategic partner. After a few years, she ran for the board and then for chair-elect. It was then that she had an opportunity to participate in CUCSA for the first time.

What’s kept her involved since: “Absolutely the friendships and the connections,” says Chavez. “I feel like I have friends at each of the UC locations now — people who I can call on if I need to brainstorm ideas, to share opportunities or even just to bounce ideas off from.”

When did you start working for UC? February 7, 2005

In five words or less, what do you do for UC? Communicate with employees and unions

Why do you love working for UC? The people. We have an incredible group of staff throughout the system, working to educate and better the world. It’s inspiring.

What’s something people don’t know about you? My favorite hobby outside of work is traveling to new places with a nature focus. My goal is to visit every state by age 50. On my bucket list is visiting all 61 of the national parks. Those with plenty of water are my favorite: Ocean, river, swimming pool, rain, shower — it does not matter where, but I am happiest in or near water.

Who’s your dream dinner guest (living or dead)? Beyoncé. I think she’s hugely inspiring — her music and the way she performs it has a lot of soul and emotion. I’ve seen her twice in concert, and she seems so humble and grateful for where she is and who she’s become. And, I think she’s helping to change the expectation of what a strong, powerful woman can look like in the entertainment business.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received? Others may support and mentor you, but ultimately you are responsible for your development and growth.
