Custom ScopeResponsible for activities associated with the design, construction, and installation of exhibitions for a museum, including procedures, personnel administration, and budgetary expectations. Receives objectives from the registration and collection manager, curator, or museum director. Provides guidance and direction to lower-level exhibitions professionals, preparators and other technical staff. Typically, the bargaining unit job code should be used for work covered by this title. However, if the position is not covered by the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA) due to one of the following reasons—(1) Confidential status, where duties normally require access to confidential information that significantly influences the development of management’s bargaining or grievance positions; (2) employed outside of California at a location with 100 or fewer employees; or (3) Supervisory status, where duties include supervising employees as a regular part of the job—then the position should be listed under the generic title without the “RP” ending.
Key Resp 01Works collaboratively with curators to design exhibitions.
Key Resp 02Translates curatorial and educational exhibit requirements into permanent, temporary, or circulating exhibitions.
Key Resp 03Develops concepts and designs for exhibitions and other museum projects.
Key Resp 04Creates complex installation designs for museum exhibitions, including architectural elements, display cases, framing, or other presentation styles.
Key Resp 05Develops renderings, scale models, lighting plans, signage, and arrangement of objects consistent with the requirements of the registration and collection manager, or curator.
Key Resp 06Ensures exhibitions and objects are installed in accordance with programmatic, archival, and aesthetic requirements.
Key Resp 07Administers budgets for exhibitions, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits.
Key Resp 08May direct lower-level exhibition specialists, preparators, and other technical staff in the fabrication of components and the installation and disassembly of exhibitions, and in the regional transport, handling, and storage of artworks on loan and in the museum collection.
EducationBachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

KSA 02Knowledge of the principles of conservation, security, and environmental controls, ADA requirements for public buildings, and awareness of visitor needs.
KSA 03Knowledge of exhibition production, related construction work, and preparation of artworks, which includes mounting, matting, framing, packing, transporting, archival storage, and safe use of chemicals.

KSA 05Ability to translate a curator’s artistic and / or educational vision into an exhibit that meets the artists’, public and safety needs.
