Series Concept
Surgical Technicians perform a variety of tasks in an operating room and assist the surgical team. Incumbents arrange sterile setup for surgical procedures; pass instruments, sponges and sutures to surgeons and surgical assistants; prepare sterile supplies; assist in cleanup of the operating room; check placement and operation of equipment; and check and restock operating room. During surgical procedures incumbents may be responsible for special trays, grafting materials, and recording patient data. Incumbents perform other related duties as required.
Class Concepts
Senior Surgical Technician
Under general supervision, incumbents perform advanced duties on a regular basis typically requiring use of independent judgment. They are generally assigned the more difficult surgical procedures requiring a thorough background of skill, experience and education.
Surgical Technician
Under supervision, incumbents perform the duties outlined in the series concept on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Surgical Technician
Completion of surgical technician training and two years of experience in an operating room handling a variety of complex surgical cases; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Surgical Technician
Completion of surgical technician training; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
