Series Concept

Laundry Machine Operators operate washers, starchers, extractors, tumblers, sterilizers and dryers in a campus laundry; and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents typically load and unload washers, extractors, tumblers and dryers; prepare bleaches, starches, detergents, solvents, soaps, blues and alkali according to the washing requirements; regulate washing machines and make adjustments for temperature, water level, washing cycles and washing ingredients; clean, oil and make minor adjustments to laundry equipment; may coordinate the work of one or more Laundry Machine Operators in washing, extracting, tumbling, and drying operations; may maintain records of laundry processed and procedures used; may operate small washing machines to launder delicate fabrics or dye various materials; and may clean work areas.

Classes in the Laundry Machine Operator series are distinguished from other Linen Service classes in that incumbents perform specialized semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of washers, starchers, extractors, tumblers, sterilizers and dryers in a campus laundry.

The series consists of two levels. Laundry Machine Operator is the sub- operational entry level, and Senior Laundry Machine Operator is the operational level.

Under general supervision, incumbents perform-skilled work in a campus laundry as outlined in the Series Concept.

Laundry Machine Operator

Under supervision, incumbents perform semi-skilled work in a campus laundry. Incumbents typically assist Senior Laundry Machine Operators in the performance of duties outlined in the Series Concept.

Minimum Qualifications

Senior Laundry Machine Operator

Ability to read, write, perform basic arithmetic calculations, follow oral and written instructions, perform heavy physical work, and one year of experience in a laundry or related linen service operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Laundry Machine Operator

Ability to read, writs, perform basic arithmetic calculations, follow oral and written instructions, and perform heavy physical work.
