Custom ScopeUnder general supervision, applies complex library concepts to resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting methods, systems, tools and techniques to obtain solutions. Works on projects of diverse scope, size, impact and / or budget. This title is bargaining unit only.  There should never be an uncovered position.  Working under the direction of a Librarian, uses advanced professional library concepts and objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Duties and assignments are defined by overall objectives and involve a high level of complexity in functional / subject area specialization or coordination. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Work is performed independently under general consultative leadership. Normally, you would use the bargaining unit job code for work covered by the title. If this is a position that is not covered by the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA), because they are: 1) Confidential – meaning employee’s duties normally require access to confidential information which contributes significantly to the development of management’s positions in bargaining or grievances; or 2) the employee is employed outside of California at a location with 100 or fewer employees or 3) Supervisory – supervises employee as regular part of the job duties, then you would be the generic title without the CX ending.
Key ResponsibilitiesApplies professional concepts to perform complex or innovative responsibilities in one or more library specialties. Utilizes tools and databases to automate cataloging processes. Provides electronic catalog collection management services. Manages database batch file processing using a variety of programs and system tools. Manages synchronization and exchange of electronic data between UC campus libraries. Develops and implements processes for large scale data manipulation and transformation for bibliographic record maintenance. Trouble shoots integrated library system problems. Maintains accuracy of library database and integrated library system by performing database maintenance. Performs original, complex cataloging of library resources in all subject areas. Modifies records as necessary. Improves cataloging efficiencies through new techniques, systems and workflow redesign. Writes or updates cataloging documentation and procedures. Serves as library’s technical expert. Performs cataloging training for library staff.Applies advanced professional concepts to perform highly complex responsibilities in one or some of the following library specialties. Collection Development, Selection and Exchange: Utilizes specialized technical or language expertise to serve as selector for one or more discrete subject specialties delegated by a Librarian who manages the collection; in connection with this responsibility, may possess fund authority and manages budget requests and allocations; serves as vendor contact for negotiating license agreements and coordinating library access to electronic databases; reviews collections for comprehensiveness and creates desiderata lists. Reference and Instruction: Serves at a reference desk or general public service desk providing full range of services to patrons using library resources and other information resources in a wide range of formats, languages, and disciplines; develops standard educational activities and assessments of basic student library skills. Interlibrary Services: Negotiates, establishes, and interprets loan agreements with other institutions. Cataloging: Within one or more discrete subject specialties, utilizes specialized technical or language expertise to perform full original cataloging for serials, series, and other multi-part materials as delegated by a Librarian; contributes authority records to national cooperative cataloging program and / or performs complex authority and headings work in local database. Monographic Processing: Creates documentation of acquisitions / processing procedures and functions, setting goals and priorities for area of responsibility; performs problematic snag analysis for depository publications. Serials Processing: Creates documentation of serials processing procedures and functions, setting goals and priorities for area of responsibility. Orders and Payments: Manages and directs a midsized ordering or payments unit with multiple functions and boundary crossing responsibilities; acts as liaison with vendors, library administration, selectors or other staff members in establishing appropriate acquisition / processing arrangements. Preservation: Acts as liaison with vendors, library administration, selectors, or other staff in establishing appropriate preservation arrangements. May lead a team of staff library professionals and / or assistants. Analyzes, evaluates, interprets and revises or proposes revisions to established operational guidelines within scope of assigned responsibilities.
