Class Concepts
Under supervision, Referees and Umpires officiate at regulation sports
contests to ensure that rules are observed and proper procedures followed; and
perform other related duties as required.
Incumbents typically apply official rules of various sports such as
basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, baseball and tennis during league
and tournament games including determination of penalties for infractions;
ensure that play proceeds according to the official rules; maintain complete
and current knowledge of rules and regulations as necessary; ensure that
games start on schedule, are conducted with proper equipment and dress, and
that the precautions for the safety of players and spectators are observed;
prepare and submit to proper officials the record card at the end of each
league or tournament game; and enforce all rules and regulations pertaining
to the use of campus athletic and/or sporting facilities while refereeing or
umpiring.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and a
Comprehensive knowledge of the rules and regulations of games refereed or
umpired; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and
knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the
duties assigned to the position.
