Job Summary

Involves providing individualized services and support to college students who are underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, or otherwise at greater risk of academic challenges, to promote their success. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. Includes specializations in particular underrepresented groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs.

Custom ScopePerforms a limited range of counseling and advice to targeted students. Provides straightforward counseling and advice to commonly encountered situations independently, but receives assistance for unusual situations. This title is bargaining unit only. There should never be an uncovered position.  Provides the full range of assessment, counseling, and advice to targeted students, and makes referrals to organization and community resources. Works independently, receiving guidance on complicated problems / situations. Typically, the bargaining unit job code should be used for work covered by this title. However, if the position is not covered by the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA) due to one of the following reasons—(1) Confidential status, where duties normally require access to confidential information that significantly influences the development of management’s bargaining or grievance positions; (2) employed outside of California at a location with 100 or fewer employees; or (3) Supervisory status, where duties include supervising employees as a regular part of the job—then the position should be listed under the generic title without the “SV” ending.Independently develops and administers complex programs to provide holistic counseling to “at risk” student populations, including setting program goals and objectives. Assists other Academic Achievement Counselors on most complicated and sensitive counseling situations. Advises organization management / departments / academic programs about the special needs of underserved populations.
