Custom ScopeApplies skills and knowledge of lactation process to educate patients, families, and health professionals about breast feeding and human lactation. Provides evidence-based breastfeeding support and develops individual care plans for breastfeeding mothers. Leads hospital breastfeeding classes. This title is bargaining unit only. There should never be an uncovered position.Applies clinical background and extensive knowledge of lactation process to handle complex cases where patients are experiencing breastfeeding difficulty and / or are in high risk situations. Develops individual care plans for breastfeeding mothers. Administers medications and / or treatment as part of patient care plan. Develops and evaluates breastfeeding educational curriculum and leads hospital training. Normally, you would use the bargaining unit job code for work covered by the title.  If this is a position that is not covered by the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA), because they are: 1) Confidential – meaning employee’s duties normally require access to confidential information which contributes significantly to the development of management’s positions in bargaining or grievances; or 2) the employee is employed outside of California at a location with 100 or fewer employees or 3) Supervisory – supervises employee as regular part of the job duties, then you would be the generic title without the HX ending.
Key ResponsibilitiesEducates patients on breastfeeding techniques, equipment and frequency. Provides support and problem solving to patients experiencing breastfeeding difficulty. Develops individual care plans for breastfeeding mothers. Develops feeding plans to address nutritional needs of the infant. Consults with physicians and members of the patient care team regarding patient condition and disposition. Documents patient progress in accordance with clinical standards. Leads hospital breastfeeding classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers. Develops and / or utilizes educational materials to facilitate patient understanding. Maintains reference library of breastfeeding materials and community resources. Adheres to lactation protocols and updates patient medical record. Complies with all policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and clinical practice. Stocks and maintains lactation rooms and storage areas ensuring supplies are available for lactation needs. Serves as an advocate for breastfeeding women by promoting successful breastfeeding and supporting infant feeding choices. Partners with community resources and initiates referral process appropriate to patient needs.Functions as a lead and provides additional support and problem solving to patients experiencing breastfeeding difficulty. Deals with all aspects of the lactation process and triages breastfeeding problems. Provides nursing services to address a range of concerns. Develops individual care plans for breastfeeding mothers. Develops feeding plans to address nutritional needs of the infant. Consults with physicians and members of the patient care team regarding patient condition and disposition. Documents patient progress in accordance with clinical standards. Develops and leads hospital breastfeeding classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers. Evaluates training curriculum and educational materials ensuring program meets patient needs and regulatory requirements. Establishes and documents lactation protocols in collaboration with health care team (MD, NP, Midwife, etc.). Complies with all policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and clinical practice. Identifies potential compliance risks. Ensures supplies are available for lactation needs. Serves as an advocate for breastfeeding women by promoting successful breastfeeding and supporting infant feeding choices. Leads continuing education classes on lactation for healthcare professionals. Partners with community resources and initiates referral process appropriate to patient needs.
