Your UC benefits are designed to protect you and your family. Make sure to designate beneficiaries for your retirement and insurance accounts — and keep them up to date — so your benefits will go to whom you intend.

Depending on your benefits, you'll need to designate beneficiaries for:

  • UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) benefits (including Pension Choice)
  • Life insurance
  • Accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance
  • UC Retirement Savings Plan accounts (including Savings Choice, Pension Choice supplemental accounts and other DC, 403(b) and 457(b) Plans)
  • Health Savings Account balances

Please note: If you are married, your spouse may have a legal interest in benefits payable at your death. A beneficiary designation may be subject to challenge if it will result in your spouse receiving less than your spouse’s share of that portion of the benefit that is considered community property.

How to designate and update beneficiaries

You can update beneficiaries online through your secure UC Retirement At Your Service (UCRAYS) and/or Fidelity NetBenefits accounts, or by calling HealthEquity. Here's how:
  1. Log in to UCRAYS and click “Manage Contacts” on the main menu.
  2. On the Manage Contacts page, click “Manage Beneficiaries.”
  3. On the Manage Beneficiaries page, click “Add/Edit Beneficiary.”
  4. On the Beneficiary Designation page, click “Add New Beneficiary.”
  5. Enter your new beneficiary’s information. If your new beneficiary is already an existing contact, you can select that person from the Existing Contact dropdown to automatically fill in their information. Click “Add New Beneficiary.”
  6. Repeat the process to add multiple beneficiaries. When you are finished, click “Next.”
  7. On the Beneficiary Designation page, specify whether each beneficiary is primary or secondary. You may enter a percentage share amount or check “Equal Share” to evenly distribute shares among your beneficiaries. When you are finished, click “Next.”
  8. Review and confirm your beneficiary designations. A confirmation will be sent to your email address on file.

Log in to your netbenefits.com account and click on “Profile.”

In addition to keeping your beneficiary information up to date, you can review and edit personal and contact information and choose how you would like to receive important information. Please note that a telephone number is required for multi-factor authentication, an added level of account security enabled on netbenefits.com.
