Series Concept
Medical Assistants provide non-licensed medical support to medical care providers in an outpatient setting. Incumbents room patients; set up equipment and instruments, maintaining sterile technique as required; assist providers with performing, exams and procedures; collect, prepare and analyze specimens, including performing phlebotomy; and with proper provider authorization, provide instructions, test results; sterilize instruments; cleans and calibrates equipment; cleans and stocks exam rooms; and provides proper documentation in electronic patient chart. Incumbents may also provide front office services on a back-up basis.
Class Concepts
Medical Assistant I
Positions at this level provide the full range of duties as described above.
Medical Assistant II
Positions at this level provide the full range of duties as described above. May serve as a lead for a group of medical assistants. May provide phlebotomy and provide assistance in performing complex procedures.
Medical Assistant III
Positions at this level assist the patient care team by coordinating care for patients on and off the daily schedule. Acts as a primary conduit for the transmission of information between providers and patients and coordinate services for all patients who are part of the assigned panel, especially those with serious, complex or chronic health problems. Provides advocacy, information and referral services to patients and families to address their medical and psychosocial needs.
Medical Assistant II – Supervisor
Positions at this level serve as a supervisor for a group of medical assistants.
Minimum Qualifications
Medical Assistant I
Written evidence to validate training and competency as a medical assistant (i.e., certificate of completion of an accredited medical assistant training program, or letter from supervising physician).
Medical Assistant II
Requires certification from an accredited medical assistant training program. If applicable, requires a certification in phlebotomy. One year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical practice.
Medical Assistant III
Requires certification from an accredited medical assistant training program. If applicable, requires a certification in phlebotomy. At least two years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical practice.
Medical Assistant II – Supervisor
Requires certification from an accredited medical assistant training program. If applicable, requires a certification in phlebotomy. At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical practice.
Specific qualification requirements are approved for positions by the Human Resources Director in accordance with the provisions of Personnel Policies for Staff Members. Positions allocated to the supervisory titles must meet the criteria for supervision as defined in the Supplemental Guidelines for Supervisory Classes (SAM 12).
