Series Concept

Tree Trimmers perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and trimming of trees to promote their health and appearance; and perform other related duties as required.

Class Concepts

Tree Trimmer

Under supervision, incumbents maintain and trim trees to promote their health and appearance; climb tall trees using safety belt, saddle, rigging, or other safety devices in accordance with safety standards determined by height, proximity to buildings, and condition and size of limbs.

Tree Trimmers top and reshape trees; trim or remove dead, diseased or unsightly growth and trim new growth; lower cut branches by slings or lines; cable and bolt trees to cross support weak limbs; prune and trim trees to achieve attractive shapes depending on location and type of tree; ensure proper “fall” of trees or tops; recognize and report diseased trees or other unhealthy conditions; assist in tree surgery; use hand and power chain saws or other tree trimming equipment; maintain climbing and trimming equipment; and may perform the duties of a Groundskeeper as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Tree Trimmer

Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations; two years of experience in the care of trees, including at least one year of tree trimming experience involving climbing; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
