Class Concept

Under supervision, Lead Service Engineers serve as leaders for a small crew of Service Engineers, Steam Operating Engineers and Facility Mechanics to maintain, repair, modify and/or alter heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems on the campus. In addition to performing the full range of responsibilities of a Service Engineer; assign work orders to subordinates, provide workers with job instructions as needed, monitor job performance and report to the Senior Superintendent on a daily basis. Review the accuracy of hours charged against work assignments; approve ordered materials and supplies; respond to customer trouble calls and complaints; insure all preventive maintenance is performed; and provide emergency or scheduled repairs to mechanical equipment.

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Maintenance & Repair

  • Service major and auxiliary equipment including absorption and centrifugal water chilling equipment, direct expansion units, steam turbines, motors, fans, pumps, controls, and other specialized equipment, by making necessary adjustments to regulate operation and make recommendations for further action.
  • Work with sub-zero refrigeration involving two stage and cascade systems.
  • Maintain, repair, and overhaul air conditioning refrigeration systems of reciprocating, centrifugal, and absorption types, including electrical (open and hermetic) motors and steam turbines, and their respective controls and safety devices, and related equipment, e.g., pumps, cooling towers, etc.
  • Maintain and repair high and low pressure boilers and their combustion and control systems.
  • Identify, repair and report malfunctions/problems; e.g., high/low temperatures or pressures, excessive vibrations, liquid levels, flows, fluctuating conditions.
  • Respond to trouble calls involving an emergency repair or replacement.

Installation & Modification

  • Operate, maintain and repair air moving, heating, cooling, humidification, distribution, and filtering equipment and systems involving electric and pneumatic modulating thermostats, humidistats, duct stats, and pressure and volume controls.
