Series Concept
Farm Machinery Mechanics service, maintain and repair a wide variety of farm and construction equipment such as trucks, tractors, bulldozers, cranes, loaders, ditching machines, graders, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, combines, wind machines, stationary engines and pumps, attached or towed tillage and harvesting machines and earth-moving equipment; diagnose and correct mechanical malfunctions; repair, overhaul and rebuild gasoline, propane and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, drive trains and hydraulic, electrical, and cooling systems. Incumbents typically lubricate designated parts of farm machinery; operate field service trucks for lubrication, refueling, and minor field repairs; dismount, repair and replace tires; make sheet metal repairs; weld and braze; operate metal lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, and other shop tools; and perform other related duties as required.
Class Concepts
Senior Farm Machinery Mechanic
Under direction, Senior Farm Machinery Mechanics plan, organize and direct the operations of a farm machinery service garage; set up inspection and preventative maintenance schedules; maintain and repair of all types of light and heavy-duty agricultural equipment as outlined in the series concept; and establish and maintain shop safety procedures.
Examples of assignments allocated to this level of difficulty and responsibility are:
- Designs and fabricates specialized farm equipment and machines for field research projects.
- As a working supervisor, plans, assigns, and reviews all mechanical work performed by Farm Machinery Mechanics and makes difficult adjustments to farm equipment.
Farm Machinery Mechanic
Under general supervision Farm Machinery Mechanics maintain and repair all types of light and heavy duty agricultural equipment and other equipment as outlined in the series concept.
Examples of assignments allocated to the operational level of difficulty and responsibility are:
- Receives and assembles new farm machinery equipment such as planters, harvesters and sprayers, and adjusts and calibrates machinery in accordance with operating specifications.
- Maintains and repairs harvesting equipment such as forage choppers, swathers, and balers; and keeps maintenance and repair records of each machine.
- Assists in the fabrication and design of trailers, decks, and other specialized equipment.
Assistant Farm Machinery Mechanic
Under supervision Assistant Farm Machinery Mechanics (1) assist in the maintenance and repair of tractors, farm machinery and heavy equipment, or (2) perform the duties of a Farm Machinery Mechanic in a trainee capacity. Typically, incumbents adjust, maintain, service and repair a variety of equipment as outlined in the series concept.
Examples of assignments allocated to this level of difficulty and responsibility are:
- Assists in removing, disassembling, cleaning, repairing and replacing parts of engines, transmissions, differentials and power train components.
- Performs the total repair work or tune-up for limited parts of farm equipment such as the brake, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
Farm Machinery Attendant
Under close supervision attendants perform routine preventative maintenance duties related to tractors, farm machinery and heavy construction equipment; lubricate engines, transmissions, differentials and running gear; inspect cooling, electric and hydraulic systems in accordance with operating standards; maintain and exchange batteries; inspect for malfunctions and safety standards; and maintain records of service, inspections, and replacements.
In addition to shop services, incumbents perform field inspections and operate mobile service and fuel trucks.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Farm Machinery Mechanic
Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations and four years of experience as a farm machinery mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Farm Machinery Mechanic
Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations and two years of experience as a farm machinery mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Assistant Farm Machinery Mechanic
Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations and two years of experience in servicing and assisting in the maintenance and repair of farm machinery equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Farm Machinery Attendant
Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations, and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
