Series Concept

Automotive Equipment Operators drive automobiles, medium or heavy duty trucks, buses (designed for carrying more than 10 persons including the driver), tractortrailer rigs, or similar automotive equipment in the transport of equipment and supplies, materials and passengers; and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents drive buses transporting students, employees or the public on scheduled or special routes on and off campus; load, haul and deliver freight such as supplies, equipment, furniture, laundry, animals and food between various University departments, terminals and supply sources; operate rubbish trucks, making routine collections and disposals; operate dump trucks; clean and service equipment; perform miscellaneous labor and errands as assigned; may supervise the work of one or two helpers; and may perform related record-keeping duties.

The distinguishing characteristics among the three levels are the weight or type of vehicle operated, or the class of driver’s license required.

Class Concepts

Principal Automotive Equipment Operator

Under supervision, incumbents perform the duties of the series wherein the major responsibility is in operating a heavy duty truck weighing in excess of 4 tons, or vehicle which requires a Class 1 California Driver’s License. A Class 1 License permits the driving of any combination of vehicles, allows the towing of a trailer weighing 6,000 pounds gross or more, and permits the towing of more than one trailer.

Senior Automotive Equipment Operator

Under supervision, incumbents perform the duties of the series wherein the major responsibility is in operating a medium truck weighing 1 1/2 to 4 tons, inclusive, or bus designed to carry ten or more passengers, or a vehicle which requires a Class 2 California Driver’s License. A Class 2 License allows for operation of a bus, farm labor truck, single vehicle with three or more axles, and any vehicle towing another vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds gross.

Automotive Equipment Operator

Under supervision, incumbents perform the duties of the series wherein the major responsibility is in operating a passenger car, light truck weighing less than 1 1/2 tons, or small bus.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations, and one year of experience in the operation of automotive equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Must have a valid California Department of Motor Vehicles Driver’s License for the class of vehicle to be operated. Must have no license restrictions other than for corrective lenses.
