UC is a champion for equality

The University of California was founded on the belief that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. This core value of equality extends throughout everything we do, including employment policies and practice.

AFSCME has produced a series of reports that creates an inaccurate picture of UC’s hiring and compensation practices. In fact, the University of California is recognized around the world as a champion for human dignity and equal rights. And we continue to work on it.

Employee diversity is increasing

AFSCME’s statements about declines in diversity are inaccurate. The broad picture shows UC’s workforce is becoming increasingly diverse — just as the state’s population is. From 1996 to 2015, the employees in AFSCME’s bargaining units grew by more than 8,600 employees, with headcount growth in every ethnic group, especially among Asians/Native Hawaiians and Hispanics/Latinos.

Wages are based on position, not race or gender

UC believes AFSCME’s statements about wide disparities in wages based on race or gender are inaccurate. There are 429 different job titles among AFSCME service employees (as of Oct. 2015) and UC believes the union’s methodology of comparing wages by ethnicity is flawed.

When comparing average pay rates by job role, salary differentiation by race and ethnicity almost disappears. Those in the same role and location are paid nearly the same hourly rates. Any remaining discrepancies may be caused by differences in prevailing wages from market-to-market, and differences among the number of employees with a specific job title in a market compared to the overall system-wide average.

UC’s wages are based on the position, its location, applicant’s experience when hired, length of service and merit reviews.
