Series Concept

Coumunity Health Workers assist in and/or perform the planning, implementation and/or coordination of a variety of community health programs and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents typically work in induction units, treatment units and/or group therapy units in inpatient, outpatient, halfway houses, community centers and/or residential settings; work with incumbents in the camnunity involved with special problems in areas such as alcoholism, drug abuse, criminal behavior and other related personal problems; work closely with various cultural elements in the community e.g., minorities, youth, aged, hippie and also with governmental and private agencies to develop better cOIIlllunications between groups and also to provide health care services; develop non-professional health resources in the conmunity through education and/ or training of volunteers; identify home, family or connnunity conditions needing improvement and motivate individuals or groups to correct these conditions; and arrange for therapeutic treatment of individuals as necessary.

The series consists of six levels based on varying degrees of managerial or supervisory responslbility; specific technical knowledge of community and/or individual health care methods or personnel needs; and the degree of involvement in the community.

Class Concepts

Community Health Worker V

Under direction, incumbents manage and/or coordinate the day-to-day activities of a specialized health care program in an educational, inpatient, outpatient, community and/or residential setting. Incumbents typically coordinate the daily activities of induction units, treatment units, manpower development projects and/or group therapy units; direct and supervise administrative and related health care personnel; assist Community Health Program Chief incl.U'.Ilbents and/or professional medical personnel in establishing, implementing and evaluating special research programs related to problems such as inadequate health manpower training, nutrition, alcoholism, drug abuse and criminal behavior. Incumbents may develop special programs to educate members of the community on health programs and to promote improved health practices; and may consult with selected agencies and groups to improve the delivery of health services in the camnunity.

Community Health Worker IV

Under direction, incumbehts serve as principal . assistants to Camnunity Health Worker V incumbents. Incumbents may in addition perform the range of duties outlined for Community Health Worker V incumbents during their absence or when in charge of a less complex facility or as delegated by Community Health Worker V incumbents during the performance of normal work assigmnents; and may be responsible for coordinating special functions such as training and public relations.

Community Health Worker III

Under general supervision, incumbents provide individual and/or group counseling on a variety of health care problems in inpatient, outpatient, ha.lf'way houses, community centers ana./or residential settings. Incumbents typica.l.ly implement procedures for providing health care services to individuals and/or groups in the camnunity; maintain liaison with community and agency personnel in the development of health services; and perform individual and/ or group counseling as necessary. Incumbents may in addition assist higher level Community Health Workers in the performance of supervisory, training, and/or administrative functions; and may develop occupational placement programs for ex-drug addicts, ex-alcoholics, ex-criminals and/ or physically or mentally handicapped individuals.

Comnunity Health Worker II

Under supervision, incumbents work with coomunity groups to determine health care needs of particular social ethnic and racial groups and recamnend steps for treatment to professional personnel as required for the development of remedial programs; participate in the provision of health services to the camnunity as individual and/or group counselors under professional super vision; assist in occupational placement of ex-drug addicts, ex-alcoholics, ex-criminals or selected individi.als who are physically or mentally handi capped. Incumbents in a clinic setting pre-screen applicants for admission to the program; interview and/or orient individuals and groups; make appoint ments; for laboratory tests and medical appointments; and provide initial counseling to incaning patients.

Community Health Worker I

Under supervision, incumbents work with camnunity groups to determine health care needs and communicate these health care needs to professional personnel as necessary; assist higher level Camm.unity Health Workers and/or other professional personnel in the delivery of health services to individuals and/ or grou;ps. Incumbents may participate in in-service training sessions to increase their knowledge of available health services and current methods and techniques available to improve their understanding of related clinical situations; and may act as interpreters in contacts with non-English speak ing conm:runity residents.

Community Health Worker Assistant

Under close supervision, incumbents provide liaison between clients, patients, members of minority community groups and health service agencies or departments; assist professional and technical staff members in the provision of varied health and related services to minority community members. Incumbents may act as interpreters in contacts with non-English speaking community members; may assist community members with such services as shopping, homemaking, budgeting, child care, and in filling out service referral, medical history and related forms. Incumbents typically participate in in-service training sessions to increase their knowledge of available health services and current methods and techniques ava.ilabie to community health workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Commmunity Health Worker V

Graduation from high school and four years of experience in the health or social service field, typically involving minority social, ethnic and/or cultural groups in the areas of health program planning and development and including one year of managerial or supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Community Health Worker IV

Graduation from high school and three years of experience in the health or social service field, typically involving minority social, ethnic and/or cultural groups in the areas of health program planning and development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Community Health Worker III

Graduation frcm high school and two years of experience in the health or social service field, typically involving minority social, ethnic and/or cultural groups; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Commnunity Health Worker II

Graduation from high school and one year of experience in the health or soci~l service field, typically involving minority social, ethnic and/or cultural groups; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Community Health Worker I

Ability to read, write and perform basic aritmn.etic calculations and six months of experience in the health or social service field, typically in volving minority social, ethnic and/or cultural groups; or an equivalent canbination of education and experience.

Community Health Worker Assistant

Ability to read, write and perform basic aritmnetic calculations and a desire to work with minority social, ethnic and/or cultural groups in the health or social service field.
