Under direction of the Director of Student Health and/or Dental Director/Lead Dentist provides general and specialty dental care to adolescent and adult patients, including assessing and treating a wide variety of conditions, ailments and injuries. Diagnoses, manages and treats patients. Refers patients with more serious dental conditions to other specialists for more complex care or other dental care facilities for more intensive care. Licensure required.

Custom Scope

Evaluates and treats patients coming into the Student Health Clinics. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced dentist with a full understanding of professional practices. Independently performs the full range of dentist duties. Acts as head of a treatment team.

Evaluates and treats patients coming into the Student Health Clinics. Applies advanced professional dentist concepts to perform highly difficult general dental work or surgical work. Consults on problem or difficult cases. Mentors and oversees performance management of assigned personnel.

Evaluates and treats patients coming into the Student Health Clinics. Performs specialized procedures. For example, endodontics or oral & maxillofacial surgery or periodonitcs or orthodontics or dentofacial orthopedics assess and treatment. Consults with other dentists on difficult or specialized cases requiring specialized medical knowledge and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Applying professional dentist concepts, examines and diagnoses patients, prescribes and administers dental treatments, advises patients on how to use medications, performs select procedures; administers anesthesia, and performs other dental functions, as authorized. Orders examinations, analyses, X-rays, and writes prescriptions. Reviews reports, supervises trainees and provides consultation to mid-level practitioners. Provides oversight and dental guidance to other members of clinical staff. Attends and participates in staff conferences.

Applying advanced professional dentist concepts, provides direct patient care for cases difficult, acute or chronic diseases or disorders. Conducts programs for continuous staff education in current developments in dental science. Presides at consultative or clinical conferences. Presides at consultative or clinical conferences. Consults on more difficult cases to review clinical records and determine if appropriate treatment is being given. Performs audits of completed clinical work.

Makes appropriate recommendations to organization leadership. May serve as chair of major committee associated with ensuring quality of care.

Performs procedures associated with area of specialization (for example, surgery, occupational dental). Sees primary dental care patients requiring a higher degree of subject matter expertise or primarily sees patients in a consultative basis in area of specialty. Performs surgical procedures; providing pre- and post-surgical care. Presents at educational conferences on area of specialization. Directs other dentists and professional staff to ensure quality of care.

Education

Requires Dental License as verified by Dental Board of California. Board Certified preferred at this level. Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of dentistry in California as determined by the Dental Board of California.

Must be Board Certified, current in Dentistry as verified by American Board of General Dentistry and be in possession of the legal requirements for the practice of dentisty in California as verified by Dental Board of California.

Must be Board Certified, current in Dentistry Specialty as needed by location to be verified by the Special Care Dentistry Association and be in possession of the legal requirements for the practice of dentisty in California as verified by Dental Board of California.
