Senior Library Bookmender
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the most difficult tasks in the repair and restoration of books and periodicals. Senior Library Bookmenders typically perform hand re-sewing and complete hand re-binding of leather bound books; salvage and select leather; skive leather; reback and recover; supervise and allocate work to assisting personnel; perform hand binding of unbound materials; perform tasks necessary for restoration of rare books; preserve old markings and notes; dye natural leather to match original cover; instruct and plan the training of Library Bookmender Trainees; operate gold stamping machine and hand tool gold on leather; and devise ways of processing problem non-book material for safekeeping.
Senior Library Bookmender positions differ from Library Bookmender positions in that incumbents are required to possess expert skill as evidenced in the mending of rare and old books by hand, and/or the hand binding of unbound materials. Incumbents may supervise others.
Library Bookmender
Under supervision, incumbents perform a variety of tasks in the repair and restoration of books and periodicals requiring operational skills and a thorough understanding of the methods involved. Typically, Library Bookmenders mend books; remove covers and spine; insert lacking or detached material; mend torn pages; reinforce spines and restore books; recover books; mend torn pages, maps, or charts; mount maps; prepare and mend portfolios; replace flaps; mend spines; bind and mend pamphlets; bind pamphlets into single volumes; staple, paste in covers; care for vellum and leather binds; and clean, dye, and polish leather bound books.
Library Bookmender positions differ from Library Bookmender Trainee Positions in that incumbents perform at the operational level in the independent performance of a variety of bookmending tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Senior Library Bookmender
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and three years of experience in bookmending; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Library Bookmender
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of experience in bookmending; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
