UC is working hard to reach a new agreement and lock in good wages and benefits for you before the current contract expires on Sept. 30.

We have presented nearly all of our proposals — including on the key issues of health and retirement benefits — in an effort to expedite these negotiations.

However, UPTE still has not presented its full compensation offer, despite four multi-day bargaining sessions since May and, in our view, is unnecessarily prolonging negotiations.

UC is committed to providing you with a total compensation package that is market-competitive:

  • Market-competitive wages: From the beginning, we’ve said that a key goal of ours is to ensure fair market-competitive pay for our staff. We cannot reach agreement and lock in good wages for you, until UPTE presents its wage proposal.
  • Health benefits: Excellent health care at the same rates other UC employees pay. A typical research support and technical employee in the Kaiser plan would pay $32 a month for themselves and their children.
  • Retirement benefits:
    • Current employees will see no change in their retirement benefits.
    • Future employees hired after a new contract is ratified will have a choice between a traditional pension and a 401(k)-style plan. For more details, please see our fact sheet.

The next bargaining session is Aug. 16-17 at UCSF. We urge UPTE leadership to come to the table as ready to finalize a contract as we are.
