UC and the United Auto Workers have voluntarily enlisted an independent state mediator to help move the two sides closer to a contract covering more than 11,000 academic student employees.

The university and union met with the mediator for the first time on Monday, April 28, 2014. State mediation is a confidential process, meaning the university and union agree not to disclose what happens during these sessions.

Throughout these negotiations, UC has proposed fair contract terms for employees and has been willing to discuss concerns, including non-mandatory subjects of bargaining, that the union has raised.

UC and the UAW recently reached tentative agreement on gender-neutral restrooms and lactation support. While UC and UAW have yet to reach agreement on several other key issues, the university is committed to working collaboratively to resolve differences and reach a fair contract for its employees.

Additional bargaining dates with the continued assistance of the mediator are in the process of being scheduled.
